Biography

Hi my name is Diane and I am a public high school teacher. It may seem a bit odd to have an association with a community search directory, however my twenty plus years experience in a city school system has convinced me of the necessity for people of diverse backgrounds to better understand one another. My dream is for this site to be a vehicle for such expressions of humanity. Visit us at www.lowellsearch.com. and enjoy discovering more about Lowell, Chelmsford, Tewksbury, Billerica, Dracut, Tyngborough, Wilmington and Westford.

  1. This is our first foray into uncharted waters. More specifically, we are hoping to find the keys that will open the collective wisdom of this old mill city and the surrounding towns of Chelmsford, Billerica, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, Westford, Dracut and Wilmington . The communities are very diverse from the immigrant predominant Lowell to the classic bedroom community of Westford. We have our own baseball team:Lowell Spinners and our own university: UMass-Lowell. We have hi -tech businesses and the promise of the next generation of technology: mini-computerization. The one constant is the generations of families who live and work here and therefore makeup the collective knowledge that is at work every day.

The Internet has definitely changed how people interact with others. I read a book not long ago entitled “Bowling Alone”, the title of the book was inspired by the authors thesis that more and more people are not interacting in one to one or group get togethers. The bowling metaphor symbolizes this new phenomena. What’s truly amazing is the number of communication devices that we now have available to better interact. The cell phone, Internet, etc. should seemingly make for more involvement instead of less. Are we entering a period of greater but yet superficial contacts ? What about your community ? Where do people get together ? Restaurants ? Libraries/ Coffee shops ? School PTO’s ? Children’s sports ? Church/Temple ?

  3. Hi Diane,
I think many of us today have more contacts, albeit on a more superficial level via email, Internet, solicitations, etc. The depth and quality of these “relationships” is much different than those of our parents or perhaps even our older brothers and sisters. If we think of our circle of friends as being comprised of an inner circle and emanating outward to the outer circle of sometime contacts it becomes easier to understand. My inner circle is my wife, children , childhood friends and a few work colleagues. My intermediate is neighbors, past work friends and occasional community contacts. My outer circle are people from my church, volunteer activities and friends relatives I see infrequently. I want to think some more about whether or not it is important to have many contacts or fewer of a higher (more intimate) quality nature. By for now.

  4. Hi Diane,
I’m involved with a series of local community sites in the Kentucky/Ohio area. We ‘ve discovered that a message board can be an effective means to stimulate interactivity. Of course on must monitor this on a regular basis. Have you given consideration to how you may better involve local schools, PTO’s , non-profits, etc. in your mission ?
